It crackles and it rustles. In this 6-week audiovisual KISD project – initiated by designer and music producer Stefanie Grawe aka GRAY – 22 design students dedicated themselves to the love of lo-fi music and composed their own song. For this they dealt intensively both theoretically and practically with the associated production techniques, analyzed popular pieces of music and experimented with different sounds. Of course, they also designed a visual identity in the form of a cover artwork and music video. All results are now presented on this website.

VIDEO CONCEPT

Simple gear such as an iPhone-camera and a gimbal helped create old-school camera aesthetics. Atmosphere is achieved by changes in perspectives and in speed. To get the classic LoFi-look several filters were put on top and the sending back and forth from computer to phone rendered it in a low quality.

CAMERA AESTHETICS

Throughout the video the protagonistsare shown in a bright, orange-coloredenvironment. The contrasting blueshots show the point of view from theantagonist aka the monster.

VIDEO EDITING

The Video is created in a looping, repetitivestyle. Its dynamic movement is achieved byjumping a few frames back or forwardwhenever the drum kicks. In the beginning this happens less and gets more intense as thesong progresses and takes up more speed. Thisediting style amplifies the dynamic of the story.

COVER ARTWORK

Based on the song title, we decided to design the cover in such a way that coincidence played a major role. Not only the video but also the artwork should cohere with the leitmotif of the unforeseen journey. For this reason we have made use of artificial intelligence. With the help of the Google Colab Notebook „VCGAN+CLIP“, images that are solely based on text prompts and initial images can be generated. This method is called Text-To-Image / Image-To-Image Diffusion. In this way, we let the AI abstract both photos and typography.
